that they have moved the ignition key from the left to the right side of the steering wheel. I think this will kill this car as a serious contender on the track because we won't be able to shift and turn the car on at the same time.by JackintheBoxster - Main Forum
Sorry, just read the body of your msg. Very good advice, thanks.by JackintheBoxster - Main Forum
Great, thanks. I'll keep the board posted on this.by JackintheBoxster - Main Forum
Ordinarily, I would think this is good advice -- and you've given me very good advice on this board before. In this case, though, I really think my mechanic is trustworthy. A few years ago he replaced my blown engine with a lower-mileage used one -- with great success -- and he has kept this car and our 240K-mile BMW 3 Series on the road and humming, at every juncture going out of our way to sby JackintheBoxster - Main Forum

Some time ago I shorted out the controller under my driver's seat because water leaked into my cabin. My car has been with my (trusted for many years) mechanic for a while until he was able to get to it. He is still working on it and thinks all I have to do is replace the unit, which he thinks he can do with a unit from a junkyard. Because all of this is expensive, though, he as advised me toby JackintheBoxster - Main Forum
One of the (many) reasons I chose a Boxster over a Nissan Z when I bought my car was that I realized the Z was as big under the bodywork as a sedan. This is beginning to remind me of that.by JackintheBoxster - Main Forum
I don't know if its just me and, if so, whether its because I saw a really nice 1964 356 coupe yesterday, but I saw a 991 parked here in D.C. today and, although I love the lines, it just all of a sudden seemed to me to be a hulking, un-sportscar-like brute. I know 911s have never been TR3s or MGBs (or Mia-- I mean MX-5s), but suddenly this car struck me as just too damn big. Anyone else haveby JackintheBoxster - Main Forum
Thanks, but for various reasons, I need a headset.by JackintheBoxster - Main Forum
Leadership changes at VW/Porsche, which results in major changes -- the 911 line continues its climb toward stratospheric pricing and luxury while trading on its reputation for those with money and desire to be seen in a Porsche (marketing plan developed with the teams that made sure every Triumph Bonneville mention and special edition Ford Mustang mention also mentions Steve McQueen); the Boxsteby JackintheBoxster - Main Forum
I think I asked this before, but has anyone had experience with noise-cancelling headsets for driving and listening to mapping directions from a phone using a noise-cancelling Bluetooth headset such as this one with the top down? I have a wind damper on my car, so even with the top down the noise is less than it would be otherwise, and I'm thinking about buying one of these so I can talk on theby JackintheBoxster - Main Forum
All of your math above makes sense, except it ignores the key element that some people buy manuals because they enjoy shifting gears as part of driving. For those for whom that's not important, automatics in all of their guises have been more attractive since their introduction in the 50s (I'm not including those half-automatics from the '40s). For a relaxing experience, automatics provided morby JackintheBoxster - Main Forum
These are all valid reasons why some people are moving away from manual transmissions -- some people find them cumbersome in the city, etc., and, now, of course, racing-oriented drivers can do better with PDK. All of which is legitimate. My point is that some people like to shift and that some people also liked using a manual choke, shifting is an integral part of driving for them and as long aby JackintheBoxster - Main Forum
fire engine red Chevy Impala convertible with a TWO-SPEED automatic transmission and flashing emergency lights because belonged to a friend who worked in hospital emegencies. Also a 1964 or so Valiant with a police kit that I got up to like 140 (fortunately there were no other cars in the vicinity equipped with police kit).by JackintheBoxster - Main Forum

Somewhere below, I think there's another prediction of the death of manual transmissions. It may happen, certainly, but I have to say I've been hearing that manual shifting was dead for at least 30 years (CVTs?). It may be that various automatics will win, but in my experience there are substantial numbers of drivers who want to shift, and it is not just car nuts or even just men, or even olderby JackintheBoxster - Main Forum
I've always said that unavailability of a manual transmission is a deal-killer for me for a car -- when I bought a Mustang GT in 1988, which I love for 16 years, I'd thought about a Monte Carlo SS, but no manual; when the new Jag came out a few years ago, although the conversation was pretty much hypothetical, I crossed it off my list for the same reason. Porsche, so far, keeps clutches, but theby JackintheBoxster - Main Forum
A friend has one of the new Cadillacs as a loaner -- it's not quite my cup of tea, but they're really nice, in my book. Cadillac seems to be sliding back to what it does best -- big-ass American cars. I hasten to add, though, that I sat in it and found the seats and the layout very BMW-like. The car is not a BMW clone but would definitely appeal to someone who likes European cars' feel but wanby JackintheBoxster - Main Forum
Right. One always finds people in towns whose economy has fallen apart really dig our expensive imported sports cars.by JackintheBoxster - Main Forum
that may be part of the problem. They seem less interested in the basic sportscar consumer than those aspiring toward the 911. I guess I wonder whether the weaknesses of past Miatas remain.by JackintheBoxster - Main Forum
Has anyone driven or seen the new MX-5 in the flesh? I think the pictures are pretty impressive; the initial articles are positive but car magazines can be pretty fawning. I am concerned that with the Boxster's relentless march up the foodchain into 911 territory and the cancellation of the 550, the Miata will have a monopoly on basic, tossable sports cars.by JackintheBoxster - Main Forum
Thanks, that's an interesting piece of information; I'll find out if my guy does.by JackintheBoxster - Main Forum
Has anyone had any experience or does anyone have any thoughts on this program?by JackintheBoxster - Main Forum
Drying out the water that has seeped into the drivers-seat area of my 986 and possibly fouling the security module (see previous message), I've found a part that looks like it might be a plug whose absence might have caused the leak, I think. It is a plastic disk, about an inch or so in diameter with a roughed surface and a screw tip on the other side, although I can't figure out where to screwby JackintheBoxster - Main Forum
Came out this morning to discover some sort of electrical problem -- car won't turn over at all, like a battery failure, but the lights work and the indicators on the dash do; however the electronic door locks don't and one or two other things don't either. Floor on the driver's side is damp, I think I may have a small leak in the roof. Could this be a short or a blown fuse? I can't see how itby JackintheBoxster - Main Forum
