even counting the $20 that I just spent for cat litter and a better oil container note to self, don't buy the cheapest oil catcher.by Steve (Morro Bay) - Main Forum
Needing an oil change during a months long trip away form my garage & tools, I decided to do it myself. Mainly this was because I enjoy the task, and I enjoy knowing that any screwups are my own. Also of course, I hoped the DIY cost, even including ramps and tools, might still be below what I'd pay at an indy, and certainly a dealer. Am I right? My costs wound up coming to $161. It's also time (every 12 months, if I remember). It's pretty easy to get out of sync with nice round odometer readings.by Steve (Morro Bay) - Main Forum
The main reason I asked is that I'm away from my tools for some months and want to do a change due to the large mileage I'm putting on the car during that time. I was going to try an indy, but I like knowing what's been done to the car as much as I can (plus, I enjoy doing the work). I have space, just no tools. So I'll buy the couple of tools needed (priciest of which will be a set of ramps fby Steve (Morro Bay) - Main Forum
I've always changed the oil filter when doing an oil change. Is this necessary? Do some people only change the filter every other time, etc?by Steve (Morro Bay) - Main Forum

I'm in Pasadena for the summer and don't have access to tools or a work space. I'll need to do an oil change here though, and I'm considering a change in suspension. I'm way too cheap for a dealership, and judging from the large number of indy shops, I'm not alone. I don't know which one to try. Anyone from around Pasadena care to suggest one due to positive experiences? Private messages areby Steve (Morro Bay) - Main Forum
The sketches/renderings don't look like an improvement to me. Still, it'll be interesting to see the final product.by Steve (Morro Bay) - Main Forum
Found here, this image That's where the sending unit would be if I had one, and instead I have what they call an "emergency switch" (the little thing in the inset of the photo). Looking up the item there, the switch and sealing ring will run me $4.75. Those are my kind of parts! Somewhere I saw it mentioned that if you work on this, the seal needs to be replaced. Wonder if the indy whoby Steve (Morro Bay) - Main Forum
There's no oil pressure gauge on the boxster. Is this just something used by the central computer? I've been thumbing through the bentley book looking for the part on a diagram, but haven't found it.by Steve (Morro Bay) - Main Forum
In my previous thread, I ruled out spark plug tubes for the cause of an oil leak (recent slowish leak from passenger side, front portion of engine). I now have a new candidate, but I don't know what it is. Here are some views from the front access panel of the engine compartment (where you would be working if you were replacing the belt). It looks to be coming from a large nut holding someby Steve (Morro Bay) - Main Forum

His question of why not do it without the electric component may make sense if you went by power/mass. I tried the numbers he gave and got 0.541 or 0.554 hp/kg with the electric motor compared to 0.555 hp/kg without. To me, the answer is just what you said, it's an experiment. For all the numbers discussed, I don't remember any mention of the difference in emissions. I wonder if that would beby Steve (Morro Bay) - Main Forum

Hmm, after reading Pedro's DIY page, I see that tube and o-ring replacement is not done for 2003 and beyond (no longer plastic, now fixed to engine). I guess this busted coil pack could have happened from all the vibration due to the missing screw? The other pic was an attempt to see if there was any oil inside the tube. None to see, really.by Steve (Morro Bay) - Main Forum
While investigating an oil leak (one that I hope will be solved by replacing spark plug tubes), I noticed that one of my ignitors is missing one of its two screws. My guess is that a lazy mechanic (possibly me even) didn't tighten it enough, or an even worse mechanic missed it entirely. Does anyone know where to get a replacement screw? Edit, here's a shot of where the screw goes (circled).by Steve (Morro Bay) - Main Forum
Tore was easy to interact with, and the fix worked. Forgot to mention, it took about 18 days all told. Almost all of that was shipping time. Not bad at all for un-enhanced shipping between Norway and Iowa.by Steve (Morro Bay) - Main Forum
That May snow through everyone here for a loop. Glad to hear that the drive went fine. I made a trip with summer tires from here to Dallas in Dec/Jan, and I know all about the worried slow drive behind the trucks. First, I had the location of the amp wrong - glad I didn't take anything apart. It's behind the toolkit in the front trunk, and easy to access. Second, apparently the speakers that play the low frequency stuff are the only ones controlled by the amp, and that this is a classic problem. I removed my amp, and the sound didn't change at all. Third, there's a guy in Norway who says that he can reby Steve (Morro Bay) - Main Forum
I think that the low frequency part of my sound system isn't getting any power. I almost never hear it, but once in a while the low frequency sound suddenly turns on. Usually it only stays on for a few seconds, as it it only wants to remind me of how good things "could" be. My car has the sound package plus option. Does anyone know where the low frequency speakers are? I would like to checkby Steve (Morro Bay) - Main Forum
I've always found it weird how people get turned on or off by the number of cylinders in a car's engine. I bet that the majority of boxster owners would be hard pressed to actually prove that their car has six cylinders. If the car accelerates like mad and makes a great noise, why worry about the number of parts used? I admit that I'm happy to have the same number of cylinders as most of the hby Steve (Morro Bay) - Main Forum
