QuoteSteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) Check out the comments on the steering in this test of the GT3: Took the two years to get it right. I suspect that it's not just software that's doing this -- there needs to be sensors that feed back into the electric motor, as the only adjustment that seems easily done is related to effort.by m4240z - Main Forum
I did a side by side of the 981 against the 986, and the 981 tracks very nicely. You can approach limits easily without much drama. There was a 993 on the lot -- that would have been a nice car to have added into the mix.... The 981, for me, is much bigger (too big, as I'm a smaller guy), and I feel the car to be very roomy, unlike the 986. I can't see out the rear quarters of the car, whichby m4240z - Main Forum
Hmmmm....I'm at cheque 921 -- so that should put me at 981 in November or so, when the 2013 981s get cheaper....by m4240z - Main Forum
QuotePedro (Weston, FL) ... this is not only electrically assisted (power) steering, but it's also another Nanny component because it'll counter-steer in an oversteer situation (coming too hot into a corner) or in slippery (icy) conditions. Every day I am happier and happier with my plain 986. I think I'll keep her. Happy Boxstering, Pedro Nannying has been the curse and the drug of choice for cby m4240z - Main Forum
QuotePedro (Weston, FL) ... way better engineered than the 986 or 987. I was impressed with the undercarriage's new design. They dotted their "i"s and crossed their "t"s in that they fixed a lot of lose ends that had, such as the floating rear suspension which is now tied together as in the Carrera., also a redesign of the undertrays that allows for much better air circulation. They've added sevby m4240z - Main Forum
I had actually read the article before I drove the 981, and had forgotten about it until I drove the car. I have another car which has electric assisted steering, and it's a great touring car -- on long distances, I completely agree, it's great. On the other hand, I really appreciate the steering feel in non-electrically assisted steering, but I completely understand the rationale for going thiby m4240z - Main Forum
I recently took a 981 out of a test drive -- and it's a great looking car, but I'm not quite ready to pull the trigger given I still am enjoying my newly rebuilt 986 engine, and I can't justify the coin for an update....but....one thing that is a bit dissatisfying about the 981 is the steering, which like virtually all electric steering racks is numb. If not numb, at least there is a sense thatby m4240z - Main Forum

QuoteSteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) I don't know if anyone else here owns both a Boxster and a Corvette, but I have to say that they are two completely different cars. I own a 2008 Corvette coupe with the Z51 autocross suspension and manual transmission. Performance numbers don't convey the huge difference in "feel" between the two. The Boxster allows me to feel every imperfection in theby m4240z - Main Forum
You got 40,000 miles on your new 981 already? That's impressive!by m4240z - Main Forum
QuoteRoger987 I would be surprised if there would be a lot a cross-shopping of the 'vette and Porsche. R I think with the C6 there was little or no cross shopping. However, with the C7, I think it's a bit of a game changer. People that don't want to lay out the coin for a P-car, but want performance, and it appears the QC is good in the new car could be conversion candidates.by m4240z - Main Forum
I think the C7 is going to do some serious damage to Porsche -- the C7 is probably the first piece of American iron I'd actually be interested in, and for the price of a base 981, you're getting 911 performance, with what appears to be really good build and design. People looking at a 911 will be swayed for the price, and people looking at the 981 may be swayed by the performance offered by theby m4240z - Main Forum
Just curious to see how many people have them, and how many are upgraders from previous P-cars.by m4240z - Main Forum
Today, on my way home, a tree hit a streetcar line. The line fell from the centreline of the otherside of the street, and whipped across and bounced on top of my car before landing on the street and in the track where it started arcing. I frankly don't like to think too much about what would have happened had the top been down. Looks like I'm in for a new top....by m4240z - Main Forum
I tend to agree about electro-mechanical steering filtering out the texture, and that you probably don't want it all the time. For me, I do want it, as my 986 is a daily summer driver, and my other car is a rather numb feeling sedan, so I like the contrast. I'm driving a rental Audi A4 which has electro-mechanical steering, and it's deadly accurate, has a nice feel, and is great to drive for thby m4240z - Main Forum
Stop posting these updates!!! It's causing me to reach for my checkbook and drive to the local Porsche dealer -- which is in walking distance!!!! Great review -- your gas milage is remarkable. I guess my only big issue is the feel of the electric steering. Enjoy your car.by m4240z - Main Forum

QuoteLaz The original Bose raison d'ĂȘtre of having loudspeakers with multiple drivers firing every which way out the back was faulty in theory and execution. I assert that "high fidelity" as such is impossible in a car due to the environment: a small, misshapen space with asymmetrical listening positions; a high noise floor; etc. That last quality negates having a sound system with a wide dynamiby m4240z - Main Forum
I've come to gain new appreciation for the Boxster recently, as it was up on a hoist for two summers due to an IMS failure, coupled with my indecision about a 911 engine and my mechanic's timing. So, I've been driving it like a 'new' car, and I've been reminded that there are drives for which the Boxster is ideally suited. I'm in Southern Ontario, Canada, and one of my favourite Boxster drivesby m4240z - Main Forum
QuoteLaz You might recall my post a couple weeks ago about having an A4 loaner. Yes, there's pretty much nothing that will match a Boxster's steering, but it felt no better than my sister's Camry, and there's something wrong with that. The whole racing precision German engineering Diesel Le Mans thing that permeates their advertising is contradicted by a car that feels vague and sloppy, with ergoby m4240z - Main Forum
QuoteSteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) I had the Boxster in for a warranty repair on the driver's side outside mirror which was loose. I had an A4 Quattro loaner and was not happy at all with the steering feel. The prospect of driving it on a slippery road where the first indicator of traction loss would be purely visual with no feedback from the steering was something I would not look frowaby m4240z - Main Forum
Quotedb997S It won't be stripped, but supposedly, they are looking at a mid-engine to fit above the 911 to be an F-car challenger in the $250K range. I was hoping for cheaper too....by m4240z - Main Forum
I drive an Audi A6 as my 'family'/'practical' car when I need two more seats, or have a lot of long stuff to carry. It was a recent upgrade from an A4 that I had for a couple of years. About a week ago or so, someone keyed the A6 (it was a week old), and I dropped it off today to get it fixed. I got a rental of an Audi A4, base car, with an 8 speed slush box, and I was shocked at the differencby m4240z - Main Forum
Looked at putting in a 911 engine. Waited for winter to be over. Dawdled around about getting the engine rebuilt. Then when I fired the gun, mechanical took another season for his dawdling time.... Missed two seasons, but now, it's like driving a new car.by m4240z - Main Forum
I have an '03, and I have to admit that the 981 was the first Boxster since the 986 that turned my head. The 987 just never did it for me. The 981, on first sighting was right, but when I picked up some new floor mats for my 03, I looked more closely at the 981. I got the '03 because I was looking for a car that was raw, and reminded me of a friend's 914, and another friends air cooled 911.by m4240z - Main Forum
That much being said, I just got a new slushbox family sedan, and on the horrendous drive up north this past weekend, I frankly didn't miss the third pedal. An automatic P-car, PDK or whatever, in my mind is wrong. But that's because I'm a luddite.by m4240z - Main Forum
