Thanx for the data. This "new" engine has a bit over 125K on it and yes, they are the original coils. For all I can remember, the water pump just went a few months ago and this new issue and the pump are the only things to have gone wrong with this engine or its components. This car is nothing like my old 1970 Buick Skylark which occasionally ejected parts at the most inconvenient times and alby Bruce In Philly (2000 S Boxster, now '09 C2S) - Main Forum
1 mile out from my house, the engine starts to run rough and then the check engine light came on flashing...... Called my indy Porsche mechanic and he said it probably is a cracked ignition coil, but not to drive it. So, I am waiting for a tow truck. I guess the unspent gas goes through the cats and burns them out. Any reasons I should be worried?by Bruce In Philly (2000 S Boxster, now '09 C2S) - Main Forum
Well ever since SHE got into my life, things changed. That bag on the back is actually HER makeup. I could travel for three weeks with nothing but an overstuffed wallet and a toothbrush; well no more. The rack is a WillWood bike rack and HER makeup bag wrapped in plastic - would make Jed and Ellie Mae proud.by Bruce In Philly (2000 S Boxster, now '09 C2S) - Main Forum
Thanx to Rob for keeping up the old archives. Below is a cut an paste from my old post: and it shows my memory from that test about 5 years ago was not completely accurate although the result was accurate. I thought I flipped the thermometer back and forth over one leg of the trip. Last week I posted that on a 6 hour trip, the max temperature in my rear trunk was 107.8 degrees. Found this old study I did back when my 2000 S had just 30K miles on it (and the original engine). I scare myself sometimes. Now I understand why I had trouble getting dates. I did this study on a drive from Philly to Atlanta using the OBC for average miles per hour. I guess the lesson is that the car runs best when it runs fast and the OBC overstates MPG. Below is the raw data and a graph.by Bruce In Philly (2000 S Boxster, now '09 C2S) - Main Forum
I did this way back about 8 or 9 years ago in my 2000 S. While I can't find my original data, the conclusion was very clear and concise. The front trunk became way hotter than the rear. Yes I was surprised also. A description of my test and some caveats are in order. I ran the test using a cheap RadioShack digital thermometer with a max high/low memory tested by switching trunks every few hoby Bruce In Philly (2000 S Boxster, now '09 C2S) - Main Forum
I know, not what you want to hear, but it is a great product and I have been using it for about 8 years now. I used the Porsche product before that and found the 303 to last longer. While I saw it on the car boards, boaters have always used it as a pretty standard product for canvas. The big negative is that the sprayer gets all over everything (it is some petroleum distillate I think). I doby Bruce In Philly (2000 S Boxster, now '09 C2S) - Main Forum
My Porsche mechanic thought I was nuts and never heard about this in Porsches. For the first, oh 7 years of my 2000 S's life, The tach would bounce between say... 1500 and 2500 RPMs and I would hear a scratch-schratch-chzzts sound. Only on cold winter days did it do this. It seemed to have simply stopped...... Hmmmm.. The mechanic said there are no rotating parts. Now I have had a bouncy tacby Bruce In Philly (2000 S Boxster, now '09 C2S) - Main Forum

Generally, I use 3M Machine Polish with my orbital as it pretty much does anything I want it to from polishing to removing tar - and it does not leave behind anything such as oils like Imperial Hand Glaze. Give it a try. Note my post a few below this and you will see a car that has been polished with orbitals at least twice a year for 10 years with a variety of products, mostly 3M Machine Polby Bruce In Philly (2000 S Boxster, now '09 C2S) - Main Forum
Just some observations......(plus I am killing some time). Chatting with a friend, we were talking about premium cars and what you really get for you money. My opinion, given my experience growing up with American iron and, in particular, my Dad's Cadillacs, more money just got you more car but not more quality. The water pumps were all made to the same specs and would fail at around 40K milesby Bruce In Philly (2000 S Boxster, now '09 C2S) - Main Forum

A very short email addressed to the "Fleet Manager" (avoids salesperson commissions) that simply states "I will by xyz car on this date (1-2 weeks from now) from the dealer with the lowest price. I live in xyz city/state. I am flexible on color but prefer X, Y, and Z. If you are interested in moving a unit, contact me with your lowest price." You get the picture. First, I did not understand what I saw so if anyone can fill in the blanks, please post. My tech showed me some sort of output graph on the Porsche computer and what I saw was a sine wave in real time. The computer was attached to my running 2000S. The tech said that this sine wave was a failing cat but not to do anything until the check engine light came on. He said that a healthy cat wouldby Bruce In Philly (2000 S Boxster, now '09 C2S) - Main Forum

The thread below got me thinking..... Why or why not do folks use independents vs. dealers? I guess the big items are cost, convenience, trust/expertise, in-out of warranty, and specific good/bad experiences. You comments? I purchased my 2000 S new and now have around 175K miles on it and I use an independent. I do this primarily for two reasons: 1) lower cost of maintenance, 2) Trust in thaby Bruce In Philly (2000 S Boxster, now '09 C2S) - Main Forum
I guess we are fortunate here in Philly as the shop foreman at the local dealer opened his own shop. He has well over 25 years of Porsche experience and while he is not cheap, he is definitely cheaper than the dealer. He also cuts me breaks on parts... for example, a cabin air filter costs me around $75 at a dealer, I think he charged me less than half that as the markup was outrageous. Had it on a Strathclyde and then on a VPI table. Loved it and had no desire to change it. Used Grado catridges. I have my Boxster S for 11 years and no plans to change it either.by Bruce In Philly (2000 S Boxster, now '09 C2S) - Main Forum
My home computer it worked fine. On hers, all hell broke loose for no apparent reason. Go to Mozilla and look for reinstall instructions. It worked, all is well.by Bruce In Philly (2000 S Boxster, now '09 C2S) - Main Forum
I don't know who really developed it..... but Nissan also claims to have invented it and is now licensing it out to cell phone makers. Just Google "Self-Healing Paint" and you will get a ton. From 2005 (been around a while): I don't know why it is not ubiquitous by now... either doesn't work as planned or just too expensive. My 2000 S with 175K miles plastic window still looks darn good. Not like new of course, but darn good and I never used the protective cloth than came with my car during normal use. I did use it in the winter with my hard top but that really is to keep the plastic from flowing together... so I was told. Just keep it clean and that is really all you need to do. If it is dirty, then lay a thin tby Bruce In Philly (2000 S Boxster, now '09 C2S) - Main Forum
Why not buy both and enjoy max performance and safety all year long? The only incremental cost will be the extra rims but given the age of our cars, you can get refurbed wheels at a rather low cost. I did for my Porsche. Actually I saved a ton on refurbed rims for my wife's Lexus as new Lexus rims were beyond stupidly expensive.by Bruce In Philly (2000 S Boxster, now '09 C2S) - Main Forum

What?.... Oh I'm going to to burn up my Pirelli snow tires?!?! Oh shock! Oh dear. Good 'cause I hate them. I really really dislike these Porsche recommended N snow tires. So much so that I called Porsche to complain (felt good at least). I used to post that I never got stuck with my 2000 Boxster S now with about 175K miles and my only driver. I used to say my Boxster was my best snow car Iby Bruce In Philly (2000 S Boxster, now '09 C2S) - Main Forum

A local branch of NTB gave me an outrageously high quote for a set of Michelins, so high that I blurted out something like "Tire Rack has them for $xxx!!". The guy said "Hold" and he would see what he could do. He came back on the phone a few minutes later and beat their price mounted and balanced. Woa. I don't know what is going on, but the moral of the story is ask and be blunt.by Bruce In Philly (2000 S Boxster, now '09 C2S) - Main Forum
This was more than rumor, it did happen and was caused by cigarettes being ingested and then igniting the air filter. That is why on model 2000 and later, there is a little lip added to the leading edge of the air intake molding. The theory is that items heavier than air can not make the turn-in and fly by the intake. Go check out your air intake.by Bruce In Philly (2000 S Boxster, now '09 C2S) - Main Forum
I am just very conservative with my bucks. I paid cash for this Porsche new and paid off my wife's Lexus in about 12 months. I hate debt and interest slavery and usually save up before I make major purchases - no impulse buying here. Yeah, it is surreal but I think about this engine going way more than a car owner should. But I do enjoy the car and plan on keeping it a lot longer. Now I haveby Bruce In Philly (2000 S Boxster, now '09 C2S) - Main Forum
To be blunt: if you can't afford to fix it, even an expensive fix, you can't afford to buy it. You have to be realistic with any car you buy and know that there is a probability of a big mechanical/electronics failure after the car exits the warranty period. It is a totally rational discussion to explore "how expensive is this car to fix and can I afford it should bad things happen?". No, I aby Bruce In Philly (2000 S Boxster, now '09 C2S) - Main Forum
