I need to move on. If not I will buy another, and that can't be good for the marriage! I have a 325 convertible in the garage which I have NEVER driven. (I know, right?) I'm going to focus on that as a project car for a while, and who knows? I may be back when the wounds heal from this one.by IFlyLow - Main Forum
I want to thank all the members of this forum for their help and support. I am officially out of the Porsche family as of today. A while back, I blew an engine, and decided not to replace it with another known weak engine. It was a tough decision, as the 986 was the funnest car I have owned. Not sure exactly which part failed, but judging from the metal chunks I pulled out and the horrendousby IFlyLow - Main Forum

Thanks for all the info. I'm deploying (AGAIN!?) so I will hold the car til I get back. Hopefully I can find a replacement engine. I can do the work myself, so that should help the cost a bit.by IFlyLow - Main Forum
I would expect an inspection camera to have trouble negotiating around the baffles. I agree, if you're going to the trouble of the rest, you might as well drop the pan. Very easy process.by IFlyLow - Main Forum
Thanks for the help. I just saw your post, I will know more this afternoon on the condition of the car, but I may PM you later on it.by IFlyLow - Main Forum
This may be giving the fox the keys to the henhouse... My 01S 986 likely had some sort of camshaft failure (chain, tensioner, IMS, I don't know yet) Going to have it towed to the mechanics today, but I don't expect much good news. I am trying to explore all options. Average cost of used engine (Raby would be nice, but I could never justify it!) Has anyone parted one out, and if so, can youby IFlyLow - Main Forum
Thanks for the feedback. I'm taking it to Black Forest Auto in San Diego on Friday. I'll let you know what they say. If its bad news, like I expect, I'll probably part the car out.by IFlyLow - Main Forum
So, I was on dead-empty, limping to the gas station, when my 01 S stalled. (about 2000 RPM, accelerating) I figured I was out of gas, so dropped a few gallons in and cranked it again. It was slow to start (30 seconds) and when it did, it was super-rough, and there was a metallic clanking (My guess is valve/piston on one bank) At first, I chalked it up to air in the lines, or something, It didn'by IFlyLow - Main Forum
Not sure about the new one. I installed an LN bearing 30K ago, no issues. I guess the best part is that I can skip reading the posts. Can't think of a better definition of 'happy customer'by IFlyLow - Main Forum
So, I changed all my LEDs to blue, from the stock orange. I used the kit from sportscarleds.com. Wow, I highly recommend it! Turned out great. I would post pics, but I'm still overseas. The company said that beginning with MY2001, I couldn't change the center portion (the OBC area) to blue, due to it having special bi-color LEDs. They sure look like the ones in the AC display unit. Congratulations! My granddaughter is 7 months, can't wait to get home and see her!by IFlyLow - Main Forum
I went with the Wevo when my OEM disintegrated. I may have a good comparison, as I suspect the motor mount was bad when I bought the car. I noticed though, that the only difference was additional vibration and noise in the cabin. I don't track it, so I don't know if it improved performance. I am actually considering going back to OEMby IFlyLow - Main Forum
I have dealt with Charles personally, and found he was a very helpful person. I have also dealt directly with Wayne for a few special order cases. Also a very helpful person. Bottom line: 986 forum is just as helpful as Pedro's, and I refer to both almost daily. Regardless of sponsorship, etc., the owner of the website has the right to say what does/doesn't get posted. I have no doubt thatby IFlyLow - Main Forum
Wow, bad luck. Sorry to hear Pedro.by IFlyLow - Main Forum
My wife found this after an extended time under the car cover. There were huge nests in both trunks made from carpet padding and insulation. I will have to wait till I get home to get rid of the urine smell! BTW, my wife read somewhere that dryer sheets repel mice. Yeah, they used them for their nest. So much for that one.by IFlyLow - Main Forum
Brings back memories. My dad had a 914/6 when I was in high school, and I drove it quite a bit. Wow, talk about handling!by IFlyLow - Main Forum
I didn't get to sit in it, but it was there.Pretty cool, knowing the history. Got an incredible ride in an owner's RT12. He stopped at 170, but it was still pulling. The torque was unbelievable I was really intrigued by the handful of hybrids they were working on.by IFlyLow - Main Forum
I just got the go ahead today for a Ferrari 308. It took weeks of very touchy negotiation!by IFlyLow - Main Forum
Oops, must have been a different 70 year old German guy, as I just read Paul Frere passed in 2008.by IFlyLow - Main Forum
Well done film, with lots of good footage. Ruf boxster in part 4, briefly. I had a beer with Alois Ruf last summer, in Pfaffenhausen, at a town fest/factory open house. He was the most down to earth, likeable guy. I didn't realize until watching this film that Paul Frere was there also.by IFlyLow - Main Forum
I said you could use OEM. What I should have added was,"why would you want to replace a part with known issues with the same part?" If you're going through the trouble to drop the tranny, you might as well go the safe route, with a presumably much more reliable part?by IFlyLow - Main Forum
QuoteBoxsterra the bearing life is dependent on driving style. So is clutch life. Given that his bearing has outlived his clutch it follows that there is no need for him to spend a lot more for a different IMS. I think he will probably find the original bearing in very good shape but I'm eager to hear. That's a novel way to look at it. I've always considered this a one-time replacement, but Iby IFlyLow - Main Forum
It is absolutely necessary, and makes the job a piece of cake. I would loan you mine, but I'm overseas, and will be for a while. If all else fails, you could buy one, use it and sell it to recoup some of it. As far as the upgraded bearing, I used the LN, and was amazed at the difference. I wouldn't think you'd want to use the OEM design, since you're basically installing the same problem youby IFlyLow - Main Forum
I've never seen a pic from this angle. Porsche sure has polished the interior. I like the new look, and that glass looks great Pedro!by IFlyLow - Main Forum
