I'm just through an engine replacement myself -- ironically my engine blew near where yours did. If the car's in good shape, I'd put another engine in. This is what I've done and I think I made the right move, although many disagree.by JackintheBoxster - Main Forum
Marc, Thanks. Let me mention this to my guy. He didn't think it was the converters but that remaining oil in the converters might have led to an erroneous sensor reading.by JackintheBoxster - Main Forum
icked up my '01 base today after two years in the shop with a replacement engine with 80K that my mechanic was happy with. He also put in a new clutch and starter and checked everything else out. No guarantees, of course, but I'm confident this was the right move. I have it for two days now to drive around before taking it to emissions inspection Friday. Car almost working well. Anyone have experience with AAA extended waranty?by JackintheBoxster - Main Forum
The long night is apparently over. My 01 base that died due to a broken valve or piston shaft two years ago on I-95 north of Philly is now fixed, having received the transplant of an 80K engine (I've got like 130K on my car), I just heard today. My local indy guy, who I trust, liked the replacement engine and did some other work, including replacing the clutch and starter, will find out what elby JackintheBoxster - Main Forum
The long and winding road that goes back to my engine dying on my '01 base two years ago may be coming to an end. My independent mechanic informs me (I'm not a tech guy, as you'll see) that, I believe, a shaft on one of the valves snapped, sending the valve down into the cylinder where, not suprisingly, all hell broke loose and the engine froze. as I was driving. He showed me the pieces insideby JackintheBoxster - Main Forum
My instinct is to repair it. Any last thoughts, please email me directly -- shirsch170@aol.com Thanks.by JackintheBoxster - Main Forum
Marc, Thankis; you've offered good advice lo these two years. My AOS has been replaced, as has my water pump, so I'm leaning toward the repair.by JackintheBoxster - Main Forum
My guy thinks the car is good for another couple of years. Does anyone out there think I should fix it?by JackintheBoxster - Main Forum
This is another chapter in my long story of my '01 base that failed in Jersey and has been in the shop for the last two years. My local D.C. indy, who I trust, has finally gotten around to looking at my engine and pronounced it a shaft failure requiring an engine replacement (probably IMS, but it really doesn't matter if the engine must be replaced). The car has about 130,000 on the clock and Iby JackintheBoxster - Main Forum

My guess is, yes, that's it. But if so, I'd think he's working on it, since he didn't move it in before and, he has a lot of other cars on his lot -- including a couple of really nice 964s I'd love to take off his hands.by JackintheBoxster - Main Forum

For those with long memories, my car has been intensive care for two years, but it looks like there is progress. To recap, I was driving my '01 base in New Jersey, thinking what a cool guy I was in July 2010, when all of a sudden the engine died at about 70 mph. I was able to coast to the shoulder, and had it towed to a local mechanic I knew, but he could not help me at all. I then had it towby JackintheBoxster - Main Forum
No. It could be IMS, but thanks to our friends on the board here, I'm thinking not, as there was no huge oil spill when it happened. I was just driving along and all of a sudden the engine died and all the lights went on. I coasted to the side of the road and that was it. I couldn't crank it. I think he's going to take the engine apart and try to figure it out. To be honest, all things beinby JackintheBoxster - Main Forum
Many of you were not born when this story began, but it may now be coming to a climax. As oldtimers with nothing to do may remember, my 2001 981 broke down on the highway in July 2010. I took it to a New Jersey mechanic I know, who could do nothing with it. I then had it towed down to my local independent Porsche guy (Washington, D.C.) who had always done solid work for me before and is reasonby JackintheBoxster - Main Forum
Was a bad fuel pump, had it replaced by indie guy here in town. Thanks to all for your advice and counsel.by JackintheBoxster - Main Forum
I think the fuel filter was changed recently, I don't think we've ever replaced the fuel pump.by JackintheBoxster - Main Forum
My wife's BMW 3 series had trouble starting this evening -- car turned over and caught, but died on several tries, revs wouldn't stay up even if I pumped the gas. Any thoughts on why? This is a high-mileage car, just shy of 170k miles. My guess is throttle adjustment or a bad sensor, anyone have any other ideas? Thanks.by JackintheBoxster - Main Forum

Welcome to the Board. There are a few rules you should know about. 1. Always give your full model designation -- i.e., an '01 Base, or a '93 RS America, to set yourself apart from the rabble. We never say simply, "a Boxster" (and certainly not "Boxter), that's for the masses. Same with "911," although I suppose you could get away with the German "neunelfer." 2. Porsche is always the bestby JackintheBoxster - Main Forum
Thanks for that. We'll see what the guy says. There was a clicking or rattling just before the engine went but no oil or other discharge. The battery did completely discharge on the tow down from Jersey, but that may have been the tow guy's fault.by JackintheBoxster - Main Forum
No, there was no smoke. I had catastrophic AOS already on the BW Parkway. I try to have a different problem for different highways, that way I can tell engaging stories at the local bar. the motor won't start at all.by JackintheBoxster - Main Forum
which are both new to me. We'll see. IMS failure is of course possible, but as there was no oil discharge involved, that may not have been the case.by JackintheBoxster - Main Forum
You don't sound like a jerk. First, the indy in the area is Euro Motorcars in Arlington/Alexandria. Very good, I've used him for years, he has always done good work and saved me a lot of money. The wait is because he wanted to take the time to take the engine apart and, as I was able to do without the car for a while, he had other things to do, and I was at the time not working and couldn't haby JackintheBoxster - Main Forum
Perhaps some of you will remember that last year, in the distant past, my car's engine died in the wilds of New Jersey and after working with a mechanic I know up there, I had it towed down here to D.C., where an Indy I trust decided to take a look. He scouted out engines and found them pricey and said he wanted to look at the engine and see what he could find. Oh, I know, IMS failure some saidby JackintheBoxster - Main Forum
For those of you who came in late, my engine failed on I-95 near Trenton in July and, after a brief rest at a mechanic up there, I had it towed down here to D.C. to a German car specialist, Euro Imports in Alexandria, I've been using for some years. He pronounced the engine dead and started looking around for a suitable replacement, but after he saw what was out there and the prices, decided toby JackintheBoxster - Main Forum
I'm a journalist and I use the elapsed-time bezel to keep time when I'm taping an interview so I can speed things up if it looks like an answer is going too long. I also mark in my notes times for key answers so I can go right back to them when I'm working with the recording afterward.by JackintheBoxster - Main Forum
