Grant,, The hose coming off is rare. The split hose is the most common failure here in New England. UC region requires the tubes to be TIG welded. We warn everyone to change to the latest hoses. Out west a couple of years ago, I did have the GT3 cruise control set on a three digit number. Felt great! Ed Bby Ed B - Main Forum
Some personal observations as head of our PCA region's safety committee. I've seen a number of failures of the coolant systems at DE events. (GT3, Turbos, 944s, BMWs Corvettes and others) The majority of the failures on GT3 and Turbos are with the rubber hoses at the rear of the engine at the water pump, It is thought that there is enough movement of the engine on it's mounts to over stress theby Ed B - Main Forum
It's not a block issue with the GT3's and turbos. A couple of the coolant hoses on the engine are too short and they separate or split. There are new, longer replacement hoses There is also one ore two aluminum coolant manifolds that are epoxied together. The epoxy fails, dumping the coolant. The NHTSA is investigating this. Ed Bby Ed B - Main Forum
Besides Porsches, one of my other bad habits is being a call fire fire fighter. This time of year I respond to about one vehicle crash a week. ( I hesitate to call them accidents). All of them due to brain fade of the nut behind the wheel. Ed Bby Ed B - Main Forum
First, Thanks Manny. An anti-friction bearing, (ball or roller), properly engineered , will perform well in the IMS application. All engineered products involve compromises. It's all in the details. Cost is always a factor. In my 35 years as a product design engineer on devices such as fork lifts, snow mobiles, space satellites, jet engines, aircraft transmissions, etc. there have been some lessby Ed B - Main Forum
Most cars will increase engine speed a little if the A/C kicks in while the car is stopped at idle. Maybe there is a defect in that system. Edby Ed B - Main Forum
The IMS bearing is outer ring rotation and its speed is approximately half the crankshaft speed. When the engine is running the oil pump will be pumping oil to the main and rod bearings, camshafts, valves, piston squatters, etc. The oil level in the sump will be below the IMS bearing. The exposed end of the IMS is shielded by the end of the crankcase and will get very little oil splash, Probablyby Ed B - Main Forum
Good info. Unless you are flooding the engine, the amount of ethanol getting by the rings is negligible. The real problem is stop and go driving where the engine never gets completely warm to evaporate crankcase condensation. My flat tappet engines use Brad Penn oil with high ZDDP. My 2000 Boxster S and 944T have Mobil 1 15-50. The Audis have Mobil 1 0-40 and 5-40. The 2004 GT3 had its oil chanby Ed B - Main Forum

In some countries use of fog lights when there is no fog will get you a ticket. Recall the moth and the candle, where the moth was attracted to the light, flew into the flame and died. Using all the lights, head, fog driving, or any combination, could attract a "curmudgeon" to hit you head on. Or blind him/her enough that he/she crashes into someone else or runs off the road. The factory "Porsche Travel Club" also does tours. See the Porsche web site or your dealer. My wife fell asleep on one of the "quicker" sections. Ed Bby Ed B - Main Forum
The new Porsches are great! We just got back from Germany after a weekend Porsche Travel Club tour to Alsace/Vosges. RECOMMENDED Had a Carrera S with PDK with Sport Crono. left it in Sport mode, sport exhaust and sport suspension most of the time, except through towns. About 500 miles in 2 1/2 days. Tour is not for the timid. Suggest black or red group DE experience. Example: Narrow two lanby Ed B - Main Forum
Modern wide tires behave differently than older narrow ones. Wide tires had a concave tread when deflated and require extra pressure to flatten the tread. A lithe more may reduce edge wear. Toe and camber will affect edge wear more. Ed Bby Ed B - Main Forum
If you do use a full face helmet, remove the face shield or close it. An air bag can/will drive it into your face/eyes if open. You can buy full face helmets with cooling hose fittings. Running the A/C helps. Most regions have loaner helmets, so you can try different ones. In any case, buy a $10 helmet only if you have a $10 head. Ed Bby Ed B - Main Forum
The end of the bolt is exposed to the atmosphere. When it gets wet, the bolt and aluminum hub corrode. The threads will be damaged when the bolt is removed. Not an uncommon problem. Cure is a Timesert or a new hub, and a new bolt. Been there. Ed Bby Ed B - Main Forum

Like all products, the bearing would be warranted to be free of defects and thats all. A manufacturer can't control how the bearing is used or it's environment. It can only make suggestions and recommendations. Everything usually goes to the lowest bidder. Edby Ed B - Main Forum
Bearing life is predicted on a statistical basis. Standard is "L10 life" in which a failure rate of 10% of the bearings in a group is acceptable. For more reliability, bearings can be designed for L5 or L1 life. The trade offs are bearing size and cost. Many factors affect bearing life. Hi all, For those of you that haven't seen my earlier posts on this subject: I'm a retired ball and roller bearing design engineer, having spent 35 years with a major US manufacturer. We all seem to agree that inadequate or inappropriate lubrication leads to failure of the IMS bearing. A ball or roller bearing of proper design with good lubrication will last a long time in this application. I pby Ed B - Main Forum
Hi all, I think I have provided this info in the past, but here it is again. Precision bearings are made in several precision/quality levels from class 1 to class 9 (best) Automotive ball and roller bearings are class 1 ($), Instruments will have class 7 or 9.($$$$) Bearing ball separators can be stamped steel (pennies), to hardened, silver plated 4340 steel or bronze. A shot history. I had a Toshiba Satellit Pro 480 with PST 2 software and the Porsche diagnostic card that died. Couldn't get it fixed and couldn't find another. I had some documentation showing a Thinkpad 600E with PST 2 on it. Found a 600E on Ebay, and swapped hard drives. Thinkpad didn't like the Toshiba drive. Contacted several forums and friends for help. Many emails, phone calls, transfer oby Ed B - Main Forum
Good news! I now have a working PST2 again. With the help of several old and new friends and a lot of work, the hard ware and soft ware now runs on a Thinkpad 600E. Ed Bby Ed B - Main Forum
