Pedro and Jake are the Hatfields and McCoys of IMS land...still bickering year after year. IMS Solution, IMS Retrofit, and TechnoFix DOF differ mainly in oil pick up / delivery methods and bearing types. IMS Solution and TechnoFix DOF use direct oil feeds to the bearing. IMS Retrofits use splash oil. IMS Solution picks up oil from an oil filter adaper; the IMS Retrofit picks up oil from theby thom4782 - Main Forum
Pedro: You never answer my any of questions directly with objective facts to either contradict my fact-based conclusions or provide different facts to support your opinions. This is true on this forum as well as the 986 and Pelican forums. I don't ever expect you to change your viewpoint I do believe others should be aware of different viewpoints, however, so they can make the most informed deby thom4782 - Main Forum
So how do you explain why single row bearings fail at least 8 times more frequently than dual row bearings when they have the same engineering design and differ only in their load carrying capacity?by thom4782 - Main Forum
Boxster IMS bearings fail for two apparent reasons: compromised lubrication and excessive side loadings. Sealed bearings lubricated by grease alone and unsealed bearings lubricated by oil alone after the grease is washed out seem to last a long time. Bearings with leaking seals that allow grease and oil to mix together without washing out the grease compromise lubrication and die a premature dby thom4782 - Main Forum
About 10 years ago, a large tree branch fell on my car as I was driving down the road. All body panels except the driver's side door, the head and tail lights and the convertible top were damaged. My insurance paid all but the deductible. I sued the city for the deductible and won only because I was able to show that the city knew about a previous limb falling the year before. Otherwise, I wouldby thom4782 - Main Forum

The basis for my numbers is... IMS Solution (the plain bearing fix) $1700 DOF $800 LN Retrofit (ceramic bearing) $700by thom4782 - Main Forum
My personal opinion is that a sealed bearing, especially a single row sealed bearing, was a defective design when used in the M96 IMS application. For this reason, I believe the proposed IMS settlement is inadequate and plan to object. I hope others do too. That said, I see two reasonable apple to apple price level pathways for dealing with the IMS problem in 97-2005 Boxsters. Price level one:by thom4782 - Main Forum
This debate, which I characterize as the fire hose versus garden hose contest, has yet to provide facts to prove whether DOF lubricated IMS bearings last materially longer than similar bearings lubricated by splash oil alone. So far people have put forward several hypotheses that one approach is better than another. Without comparative bearing wear data or statistically valid samples of equivalenby thom4782 - Main Forum
I know the weather outside / inside the car experience well. Mine was a Connecticut car without a heater or defroster installed. Often the window would ice up making it very difficult to see. And of course, it was toe freezing cold inside the car at times. The biggest surprise I had with the MGA came when I installed a radio and it blew up. Unbeknown to me, MGs at that time were positively groundby thom4782 - Main Forum
MGA for me. I'd trade my Boxster in a heart beat for one in pristine condition.by thom4782 - Main Forum

You can buy a replacement kit here: . Instructions are very clear. Takes about 45 minutes. Very easy to do.by thom4782 - Main Forum
Nope, never experienced something like it. I'm assuming your talking about the mechanical cable for opening the door with the inside handle. If so, its called a Bowden cable. The part number for 98 - 04 Boxsters is 99653732003. Try getting it online from one of the Porsche dealers ans you should be good to go. It's about $10 before shipping.by thom4782 - Main Forum
If the key electronics failed, buy a head head from Sunset. They see if you can get an independent shop to program it. You'll need to get the key code from the dealer. BTW: it takes 15 minutes to do the programming.by thom4782 - Main Forum
Likely a vacuum leak or vacuum system valve. You'll have two options: find and fix the leak / broken part or program to rest of the world setting. If you live in a state with smog tests, the ROW setting may cause you a problem because ROW stops monitoring the secondary air system.by thom4782 - Main Forum
I've used two shops and the work was excellent. They are: Benz Auto Body in Redwood City and Arts Bodycraft in Palo Alto. Benz just replaced my rear bumper cover and the paint matched flawlessly. Arts reprinted my car after a tree branch damaged or scratched all body panels except the passenger door. Again flawless work.by thom4782 - Main Forum
So far so good. I'm not convinced yet that Red Angel Stop Leak solved the problem. In the past, it took about 4 to 6 weeks for the system to lose enough 134a to blow warm air. If it's icy cold at the end of August, RASL will have done the job.by thom4782 - Main Forum
Quotegrant "When bearing seals degrade, small amounts of oil enter the bearing and mix with the bearing grease. When this happens, the oil-grease mixture loses the ability to lubricate adequately and the bearings fail from friction." --> well..... the oil basically washes the grease away. If there were enough oil (even mixed with grease) there all the time it might work. I've see very littlby thom4782 - Main Forum
This is my understanding of the root cause of Boxster IMS failures. When bearing seals degrade, small amounts of oil enter the bearing and mix with the bearing grease. When this happens, the oil-grease mixture loses the ability to lubricate adequately and the bearings fail from friction. How does this relate to driving style. The answer is indirectly. Seals degrade when they sit in contaminateby thom4782 - Main Forum
I rolled the dice today trying to avoid a $2000+ AC repair job to replace my evaporator that has a small leak. I did this after talking to the Red Angel 'stop leak' technical support folks. They assured me that Red Angel, unlike other stop leak products, is activated by contact with air and not moisture. Because of this, the Red Angel people claim that its stop leak product will not clog car ACby thom4782 - Main Forum
The AC Pro video is excellent. It explains exactly how to recharge the system. However, the AC Pro product apparently has a 'stop leak' additive. Do not use it in your system. While it may work, it may also clog your system especially the receiver drier. This can lead to a costly repair job. And many AC repair shops will not work on a car with stop leak in its AC system. Find a can of 134a refriby thom4782 - Main Forum
Recharging the AC system is pretty simple. Whether you use AC Pro or another product, make sure the delivery system contains a gauge so you can make sure you do not overfill the system. IIRC, the procedure is simple. Start the car, set the AC at maximum (the lowest temperature possible on the AC display), shake the 134a can, attach to the low pressure valve near the expansion value, open the deby thom4782 - Main Forum
I'm trying to avoid a $3000 + AC repair. Has anyone had any experience with Red Angel? It's supposed to work differently than other stop leak products and not clog AC systems or repair shop equipment. Thanksby thom4782 - Main Forum
It's been a while since I looked, but I was under the impression that the Durametric program - at least the latest version for my cable- can "clear" the codes. Durametric says the same thing on its website under the model feature matrix. Try starting the program and select the alarm module from the menu on the left. Expand it and you'll see erase fault codes as an option. If you click on that, itby thom4782 - Main Forum
If you still have the cable, try this to narrow things down. Clear all the codes. The actuate the central system and see what codes reappear. Try to do this in a systematic way. Start with the lock button on the center console. See what codes appear and if one or both of the door lock. if one door locks, the the locking mechanism on the other door is likely malfunctioning. If no codes appear afteby thom4782 - Main Forum
I am not familiar with East Bay installers. If you want to couple the installation with a 1st rate alignment, then I'd recommend Custom Alignment in Mountain View. They did my prior set and the tires lasted longer and wore evenly. I'd bet I got an extra 5K out of them after the alignment.by thom4782 - Main Forum
I'm a comfort and longevity tire guy. I just installed my second set of Bridgestone RE 760s. I considered Bridgestone RE970As and Hankook Ventus S1s as alternatives but went with the tire I knew instead.by thom4782 - Main Forum
